For big or small companies, overdue debts are a real problem to all.  The knock on effect of a late settlement can cause problems with cash flow, in turn delaying your payments to suppliers.

I would like to introduce you to a debt recovery agent I have used and like to recommend, Direct Route.

I recommend Direct Route not only because they have worked for some of my clients,  but they also, if using the “Fairway” method, they do not charge you for collections under £3k (2% for larger debts).

(this may also be subject to age of the debt, please check first).

The rule for this collection is that you have not already charged your customer interest or admin fee.  If you have the charges are they made to you so please make sure of this.

Simple Rules for Credit Control

Always check on Companies House any new clients or existing “problem” customers. www.companieshouse.gov.uk/webcheck

If the company status says anything except Active do not to give them credit.

- Proposal to strike off

- Dissolved

- Removed

- CVA

- Liquidation

On an initial initial sales call/enquiry obtain the following:

Prior to Trading - Ask Debtor the trading style of the company

- Sole trader - and get the proprietors full name

- Partnership - and get both partners full names

- Limited - and get the Registration Number)

This will avoid any problems when it comes to suing customers. Get an order signed at the time of the request and get them to confirm it either on fax or in the post. Not email as this does not stand up in court. Definitely do not do any extra work (more than what has been originally quoted) without signatures on the extra work as you will not be able to sue for extra work
